Design Studio Entry 8


Conclusion
In reflecting on our journey as a group, we’ve encountered challenges and made significant progress in understanding and addressing mental health issues, particularly among youths. Initially uncertain about where to begin, we collectively identified Limitless, a non-profit organization focused on empowering young individuals to fulfill their potential, as our focal point. With personal relevance to us as youths, we delved into understanding Limitless’s services and identified areas for improvement.

Through research and consultations, we deepened our understanding of mental health support, exploring prevention, support, and recovery phases. We recognized the pivotal role of parental involvement and communication in addressing youth mental health issues. Drawing insights from feedback and ongoing discussions, we iterated on our proposed solutions, culminating in the development of Kinnect, a conversation card game aimed at fostering meaningful parent-child communication. As we finalize our project, we remain committed to bridging gaps in mental health support and promoting holistic well-being among youths and their families

Group Work:
We completed the packaging design for Kinnect. The box is designed to split into two, exposing two triangle decks for players to interact with. The basic box is the only packaging that can fully open while the extension box is half sealed, the grown up box is fully sealed.

We completed the slides, the slides were compressed into 19 slides. We merge the slides for the research on why mental health is important and the survey results. The other slides merged were the interview and research on parents lack of awareness.

The slides is to convey that Limitless has all the funding for additional services, the issue of why teens having mental health issue is due to lack of awareness from their parents. Hence, we created a subscription service to bridge the connection between parent and child to ensure the parents are aware of their children mental health situation.

Group Work:
After discussion we made a few changes to the presentation board. We felt that some of the previous version font size is too small and require standardising a font size. Because of that we removed the description of persona and leaving only their Needs & Desire, Motivations and frustrations. We ensure all paragraphs are left aligned and proceed to print the board for exhibition.

Design Studio Entry 7


Group Work:
We spend the day going through each other progress. Sarah went to print out all the cards and packaging with 250 gsm gloss paper. At that moment I noticed the packaging that Zoe and Jun Ren design was different then the mock up they have designed. Using the printed packaging I rendered another 3D mock-up for both the slides and the presentation board. Cheryl also requested for a few other mock ups of the website for the presentation board. I created a mock up website for choosing the items for the subscription Kit and a schedule page for meeting a therapist. Jun Ren has also completed the sticker pack called “Pawsitive Puppers” that is available to download in link below.

Sarah, Zoe and I cut out all the cards and packaging we have printed. Sarah will also be illustrating the storyboard for the presentation board and slides.

Group Work:
The group went straight into production, we decided to use the basic colours for the asthetic of the cards. Mainly blue for the basic card deck, green for the grown-up deck and magenta for the extension deck. The basic card deck consist of blue parent cards with basic questions, personal questions and adventure questions. The teen cards are yellow with the same colours. Sarah went ahead too design the details of the cards, while Zoe and Jun Ren went ahead to design the packaging of the box and the sticker packs for telegram and Whatsapp. These sticker packs are designed to encourage families to keep in touch and share moments throughout the day, even digitally. It's a playful and modern way to stay connected, adding a dash of joy to everyday messages and making sure family members feel close, no matter where they are. Cheryl on the other hand start to work on the presentation board for the exhibition. After Sarah have finish the basic design of the cards, I took it upon myself to render 3D mock ups for the cards using blender. Using the rendering I did another mock up for the website to purchase the subsription kit. I decide to use the existing website layout for the subscription page, using the black and white following the existing branding.

Design Studio Entry 6


Group Work:
We started to work on the cards itselves and the slides. We planned of the items that we would be presenting for both our exhibition and presentations.  Jun Ren and I worked on the service blueprint and user journey of the service. Sarah would be working on the illustrations of the cards, storyboard and stickers. Zoe and I worked together on the card instructions as well. I would also be working on the website after the artworks are done.

We have decided on the name for the conversation card as well, it will be named as Kinnect, as in kin connects.

Here are a few pointers that we would be including as well
  1. We have this for kids living with their parents so there is this openness that might occur but what about the kids who have overgrown living with their parents. Say early 30s and so on? How do we bring these parents and kids together? 
  2. Extension could be parents having their own set of cards to as THEIR parents. 
  3. Add more “why’s” to the cards. Instead of just what. Why do you… why does this….
  4. Add some pointers on the card. Gently guide for reflection
  5. Look into how therapy sessions take place and how we can incorporate that into the game. Not therapy itself but what it projects. A safe space, a space for discussion, creating a ritual before dinner.
  6. There needs to be closure at the end of each game. A format of gratitude for each others sharing so over time, trust grows in the family.

Group Work:
We spend the day having peer sharing session with the rest of the class. We have a few feedbacks that we have too consider. How can we better encourage the general public to purchase the meal kits in the first place? We could collab with Ministry of Education to spread awareness with students and their parents. The cards should be design with different age group. (younger child will require parents to initiate the game while older child should self initiate instead). We should include a slide that talks about having different stages of the cards (from more general qns to more in depth questions. We have to make it clearer that the cards can act as a tool for therapists to use in general.

Each of us has wrote 20 questions for the conversation cards.

Design Studio Entry 5

Group Work:
We took the feedback and discussed other scenarios both parent and child can talk. We thought of other activities that the parent and child can communicate like sports and lesuire holidays. We could collab with local tourist attractions like Sentosa to make the subscription service more enriching for the parent and child. The cards will have extension packs with every few packages, this extension pack represent different phases of the relationship of the parent and child.  

We recieve feedbacks on how the parent or child might not want to participate in this service. We had to figure out ways for the parent and child to be using the cards to make sure they are able to communicate their thoughts well. The therapist should also be part of this to ensure the card game is processing in the right direction, they would also help to diagnose if the child have any signs of mental health conditions. The parents will be essential to be initiative in this card game, the cards should help the parents to listen and respond well to their children.

Group Work:
The first day back from London was difficult, trying to remember all the details and solutions that we thought of 2 months ago took a while to come back to us. 

The solution we thought of was to work on the prevention prospect of their services. We have to find a way to forcefully have the parent and child to communicate. The best time where everyone could sit down on the day is during dinner/lunch time. everyone needs to spend time to eat and it will be a good time for a conversation to understand how each other is doing. Limitless will produce cards that help to start a conversation for both parent and child. They will work with meal kit subscription services to provide the dinner/lunch items.

We shared the idea and the feedback was positive, but we could expand the services further. 
Will the parents hope to settle their parent-child bonding through schools or government support? Cooking together can also be a form of parent-child bonding. Finding the common ground/ hobby between parent and child. Some activities aside from food to evoke positive memories.

Design Studio Entry 4


Group Work:
We grouped together and discuss on the feedbacks from the presentation.

From the feedbacks we look into the other mental wellness organisations like Samaritans of Singapore(SOS). However SOS is an organisations that focus on sucide cases only, their services are similar to limitless but without the needs of filling countless forms to sign up for their services.

We came to a conclusion to our problem statement of:
The lack of PARENT-CHILD communication is the root of deep-rooted mental health issues like depression stemming within youths.  

Our objectives will be:
To tackle youth mental health, intervening at an early age to equip them with skills and resilience before challenges intensify with age  

We were considering to create a long term service that can help parent and child communication. In the case where the parent is the issue of the child mental health we could intervine as a “parent” and assist the child in their growth.

Group Work:
We did minor updates on the slides and presented during the sharing session.

The feedback are as follow:
We may discuss how social media sets today's youngsters apart from those of the past. It appears to be among the main reasons. Discuss it in more detail. 

Examine the various groups, such as Singapore's Samaritan's. Look for areas where you two can agree.

There is too little definition in the problem description.

Together as a group, we should decide what needs to be changed. It's not quite evident. cautious with the final product and objective. Is it exclusive to parents? It's not service design if that's all there is to it. There must be more to it than that.

Design Studio Entry 3


Group Work:
We made adjustments to our slides after consulting with Wil. He noted that one of the slides implied that psychological trauma will cause inability for youths to communicate and connect with their parents. However, thats not all that causes communication issue between parents and child. It is also not inability for youths, its that youths are unwilling to communicate. The slide also implied that we should solve the issue that are under our target audience of 12 years old. We rephrased the slide and explained that parents are pulling the connection apart from their youths.

We also rephrase a few other slides and be more critical with our words. We added another potential direction after talking with Jung, adding a secondary direction on improving current existing services.

Group Work:
We started to work on the personas, Sarah draft persona involves a parent that is 42 years old and the youth being 16 years old. However, I felt that prevention should start earlier than that. In Singapore, 12 years old kids have to take PSLE to continue their studies. I believe that its where they start to have stress and pressure of scoring a good grade. Hence, start prevention should start at 12 years old, since younger parents are more caring the age of the parent is brought down to 35 years old as well.

We finished the slides for presentation for next week as well. We would cover the background of limitless, the importance of mental wellness to youth and why youths have mental health conditions. We would expain that parents are the best medicine in helping youths with mental health condition and would design a service to ensure parent and child are able to communicate constantly.

Design Studio Entry 2


Group Work:
Over a day the team did some research on existing campaign/solution on mental health. Sarah found a few campaigns from India that potray mental health to be bright and softer to make youths to feel less reluctant to talk about the project. 

Zoe found a few articles about how theatre and performance art has helped with mental health. Allowing place for people with mental health conditions to voice out their issues and be able to find more support and understanding from others.

I have found a campaign in Singapore that happened during 2023, MindSG by Health Hub. This campaign has created a website that allowed users to find all resources regarding mental health, like mental health assement and what we could do as a friend, family or for ourselves.

Jun Ren and I also find some products and services that has indirectly helped with mental health conditions. To inspire the team more and be more innovative with ideas.

We had a consultation with Wil, we came to a few pointsWhy do youths not want to talk to their parents?

What needs to change to build this trust?

We concluded that the source of all youth mental health issues started from parents not listening and not understanding their children. If parents have cared about their child and maintained a good relationship with their child they could reduce the chances of having mental health conditions.

We did more research about parenting and learned that most youth that have mental health is due to the generation of Tiger parents and asians not believing in mental health issue. However, research has shown that next generation of parents are more inclinded to become elephant moms, which are more caring to their child. Hence, we decided that our service will cather to younger parents.

Group Work:
We managed to find the annual report of limitless, in which we find out Despite having an extensive list of donors and partners, they do not have unique / large range of programmes. Their support initiatives have potential to be improved/ upgraded.

We created a survey and send it out to youths, following are the results:
Mental health issues are INDEED a rising concern and something that needs to be tackled EARLY.

Where mental wellness talks are generally not well received by our TA, we are looking into ways that we can curb mental health issues outside of these talks.

Our TA tends to seek mental health support from their friends rather than their own family. Blood is thicker than water - how can we bridge the connection between youths and their parents?

Top 3 factors contributing to poor mental health:
  1. Traumatic Experiences
  2. Lack of Support System
  3. Family & Upbringing

General View that there are NOT ENOUGH accessible resources for mental health support (63.6%)

From the results we concluded

to look into the different stages - are people more open to talk/ receive input?

Design Studio Entry 1


Group Work:
We had an discussion with what we had found over Wednesday. We all agreed to the three phases in helping a mental health patient. We brainstormed about how we could improved each service from the 3 phases

We had a consultation with Wil to gain some insights on how we could improve in the services. He recommended to look into the following points
• Over the Rainbow, an NGO, assists young people with mental health issues.
• Founded by parents who lost a son to suicide.
• Emphasizes the need for more action in mental health fields.
• Suggests bridging trust between youth and parents.
• Highlights the need for more comprehensive solutions.
• Discusses the need for peer support in situations where parents aren't trusted.
• Notes potential cultural differences in resolving mental health issues.

We discussed after the consultation to look into who would youths today speak to when they need help with mental health. We created a survey for youths to gain an insight on how they think about mental health. After which, we consulted Wil again about our next steps.

Youth Health Issues and Prevention
• Need for safe, accessible health services for youth.

Individual Research:
Based on the information from their website I learned that Limitless provides 4 main services, helpline, counselling, education and merch. I break them down to 3 categories, education(prevention), counselling(support and recovery) and selling merch. In which selling merch is their only form of income.

For education, they would host talks or participate in events to educate the public about mental wellness. They would ask people who has recovered to share their stories and how they have overcome their problems. There are also documents and facts in the website for people to learn more about mental health. Last but not least, they have an app to show a day in a life of a youth that has mental health issues and understand how they felt. 

The helpline and counselling both contacts a trained counseller in the organisation for youths to talk to. However, both requires filling in a full form before getting contact to the counsellers.

I start to look into how to help someone with mental health condition. There are 3 phases, prevention, support and recovery in the process of mental health support.

In prevention, there are ways to spot someone that starts to have poor mental health and ways to recover before the condition worsen. This requires educating the public more about the conditions and how they could help.

In support, speaking to someone would be the most effective way to help them. Looking into articles, I found that the proportion of young people dealing with mental health issues in 2022 — 25.3 per cent — was an increase from the 21.5 per cent in 2020. In Singapore there is more general practitional doctors to treat patients with mental health conditions by 2024, finding a doctor to talk about mental health has become easier and more convinent. Singapore is also launching a toolkit for parents, facility for youth with suicide risk to tackle mental health in 2024. I also found a subscription service on smartphones with AI voice coach for anxiety, worries or circulating thoughts.

Another requirement to talk when talking about their mental health is to be in a safe space to get the youth to able to talk about their issues.  There is an article about the importance in creating a space in a college where the students are comfortable to talk about their mental wellbeing. 

For recovery, counselling would help patients to slowly recover from their condition. Participating in more community activities and workshops can help to provide new goals that help in recovery.

Personally I felt that we could tackle all the 3 phases of mental health condition and create a streamline service that can help patients without going to other organisations.

Group Work:
I formed a group with Jun Ren, Cheryl, Sarah and Zoe. I was quite troubled with the topic of non-profitable groups as I have very little knowledge of how it works and not know where to begin. We went down the list of organisations and each of us came up with a shortlist of organisations we are interested in.

Cheryl shortlisted SPCA as she felt the organisation needs to improve programme cost and SANA as there is a lack of funds for the organisation. Personally I am less inclined with working with animal related organisations as the aim of the organisations is to have no abandoned pets in Singapore. There are little opputunities to work with these organisations. 

Jun Ren proposed the Green Ribbon, an assosiation that focus on rehab on youths with mental health issues. Provides services like helpline, counselling and a 72-hour/3 days family based sanctuary providing solace, support, and safety.

Sarah brought up Equal Ark, a NGO that provides animal assisted services to children, youths, families and elderly individuals. Their biggest painpoints were the funds needed to take care of the animals provided that are mainly horses. However, after further research we noticed that many of the horses are sponsored by business owners like chairman of KFC etc. The horses are also part of National Equestrian Centre, hence Equal Ark is part of another group and might not face any funding issues. The other group she found was Social Co, but we find that basically its a group that comes up with events or campaigns for other NGO.

I proposed a NGO called Pass It On, its a website by another NGO called The Helping Hand that focus on working with yellow ribbon. Pass It On itself is just a website that allows other NGO to request for items for people in the organisation. The public could donate items by the request from the website.

Last but not least, Sarah found Limitless,  A non-profit organization founded with the desire to see every youth given the opportunity to live out their potential. They tackle aspects of bullying, abuse, sexuality and the impact of the income gap. 

We decided to work on Limitless as it is more relevant to us as we all had been youths and have heard various cases of mental health cases with our peers.
